Get started in the industry with our divemaster and instructor training
Scuba diving is an amazing career which can take you to some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Reef Safari offers a traineeship that can get you started in the industry whilst giving you a life experience you will never forget.
The following is designed to give you an outline of our traineeship and help you decide whether it is the right career choice for you. If this is the career change you have been looking for, please get in touch and we can arrange an interview.
Reef Safari as a Training Facility
Reef Safari is the only company in Airlie Beach that offers pontoon diving on the outer Great Barrier Reef. We are consistently recognised as one of the top SSI training facilities in Australia and many of our graduate trainees continue with us to complete their Instructor Training Course. The reason we produce such a high calibre of dive professional is that we place a heavy emphasis on learning through experience, our trainers are highly experienced themselves and we have the ideal location to be able to offer all this.
Reef Safari as a Business
Our dive operation is conducted on the Great Barrier Reef and therefore our business is based upon providing a once in a lifetime experience to all of our guests. As much as we are in the business of diving, we are also in the business of customer service. We believe it is important for our staff to get involved with the guests and help them have the most enjoyable and memorable experience possible.
How does the traineeship work?
The traineeship is designed for you to gain most of your knowledge and expertise through experience. You will work on our vessels for a number of days in return for your certifications. No wages are awarded in this program.
How long is the traineeship?
The length of the traineeship will depend upon your level of certification when you start the course. It can be up to 90 days if you begin with no certifications. The number of days you will be required to complete will be discussed with you at your interview. Most trainees will leave the course with around 150 dives in their log book.
When can I start?
We are always looking for good candidates to complete the traineeship and if you are successful at interview, it is possible to start the course at any time. These rolling starts benefit our longer serving trainees as the individual courses will be taught and retaught, thus reinforcing the knowledge base of all staff at Reef Safari.
Your SSI Career Pathway
As a trainee with Reef Safari, all your certifications will be through SSI (Scuba Schools International). SSI is internationally recognised, is ISO certified and is also a member of the World Recreational Scuba Training Council.
In order to achieve competency at each level, you will be required to fulfil an academic component and practical skills in the water. The majority of your study will be home-based and this will be reinforced with formal classroom lectures.
The typical trainee will progress from novice diver to Dive Control Specialist through the following pathway:
- Open water Diver
- Stress and Rescue Diver
- Advanced Adventurer
- Apply Advanced First Aid
- Dive Guide
- Science of Diving
- Dive Master
- Dive Control Specialist
Throughout this training you will learn how to run a busy dive deck, assist with introductory dives, guide certified dives, conduct dive briefings, teach guests about marine biology and reef life.
If you complete your traineeship to a high standard, the next step is the ITC (Instructor Training Course). We offer the ITC to all successful trainees who wish to invest further in their career. Reef Safari is always looking for good instructors who are enthusiastic, energetic and customer focused. We have positions available in all our operations, including the Great Barrier Reef, Magnetic Island and Fiji.
